Junior Tennis Pathway

1

Tiny Tennis and On Your Marks (Blue Stage) – Ages 3-5+

Focus: Fundamental movement skills through play-based learning.
Values: Listening, cooperation, communication.

Get Ready (Red Stage) – Ages 5-8+

Focus: Tennis fundamentals, basic strategy, rally development.
Values: Fair play, persistence, teamwork.

Get Set (Orange Stage) – Ages 8-10+

Focus: Skill development, match play, strategy.
Values: Resilience, respectful relationships.

Go! (Green Stage) – Ages 10+

Focus: Advanced skill refinement, problem-solving, match analysis.
Values: Leadership, resilience, empathy.

Juniors (Yellow Ball) – Ages 12+

Competition Stream: Tournament and junior league preparation.
Recreation Stream: Social and fitness-focused tennis.

Cardio Drills: High-energy drills and point play with music—open to all levels.

    Yearly Junior Development Program

    Each term is designed with a specific focus to enhance skill development and player progression:

    Term 1: FIT & FUNdamentals
    Footwork, grips, swing fundamentals, and motor skills.
    Includes the Tennis Olympics—players set Personal Bests in agility, throwing, and balance events.

      Term 2: Rally Awards
      Players earn rally-based awards by demonstrating:

      • I Can Rally
      • I Can Start a Point
      • I Can Play Net
      • I Can Play Points

      Term 3: Technical Medal
      Focus on perfecting seven key tennis shots:
      - Serve, Forehand Topspin, 2-Handed Topspin Backhand, 1-Handed Underspin
      Backhand, Forehand Volley, Backhand Volley, Overhead Smash.
      Players earn medals (Trophy, Gold, Silver, Bronze) in the Technical Medal Tournament.

        Term 4: Sporting Stars
        Game-based learning with an emphasis on sportsmanship and match play.
        Weekly themes with awards for:

        • Fair play, effort, focus, determination, teamwork.
        • Encouraging opponents, making fair line calls, quick ball pickup, and court etiquette.

        Matt Carroll – Tennis Coach, Sandhurst Club

          Matt Carroll is the Tennis Coach at Sandhurst Club and has been a proud resident of Sandhurst since 2020, living with his wife, three children, and their dog. A Tennis Australia Club Professional Qualified Coach, Matt has been coaching in Melbourne since 2001, including over 12 years as Head Assistant Coach at Kooyong Lawn Tennis Club. Throughout his career, he has worked with top-ranked junior players, some of whom have gone on to achieve ATP and WTA rankings.

          As a player, Matt was a Victorian Institute of Sport scholarship holder and competed at the collegiate level in the United States, where he earned a Bachelor’s degree in Exercise Science. He was a four-time All-American (NJCAA & NAIA) and has a strong background in sports science, further supported by a Diploma of Kinesiology and experience as a Sports Therapist and Kinesiologist.

          • State Grade Player of the Year

          • 5x Grade 1 Pennant Premierships

          Since joining Sandhurst Club in 2022, Matt has focused on building a strong, community-driven tennis program that promotes both recreation and shared excellence. He believes that tennis is more than just a sport—it’s a powerful tool for whole-brain and body development, especially in children, as it engages both sides of the body and requires rhythmical, full-body coordination. His goal is to provide high-quality coaching in a welcoming environment, helping players of all ages develop their skills while experiencing the lifelong benefits of tennis.
